Gazetteer module

The Gazetteer module holds geographical location information. The Gazetteer module can be loaded with one or more existing gazetteers that are relevant to the institution. It is a reference source only and no actual links are made between it and other EMu modules.

A Gazetteer record includes:

  • Geographic or political place names
  • Type of place (e.g. lagoon, ford, homestead)
  • Latitude/Longitude and UTM
  1. Open the module that requires gazetteer information, e.g. Sites module.
  2. Locate the field or fields that are to be populated with location details, e.g. Latitude/Longitude.

    Note: Each institution can specify which fields can be populated from the Gazetteer module.

  3. Open the Gazetteer module.
  4. Search for the relevant record by entering in as many details as are available, e.g. Country, Province/State/Territory, City/Town, Place Name.
  5. Select the relevant gazetteer record and drag and drop the record into one of the locality fields.

    6. The locality fields are populated with the location details.

    Note: No link is established between the Gazetteer module and the module that has been populated. If locality details are changed in the gazetteer record, these details are not automatically updated in any other modules.

Note: As every institution is able to customize EMu to suit its requirements, there are many different versions of EMu. Even where institutions have the same modules, the tabs included in each instance of the module may be different; and even where institutions have tabs with the same name, the fields on those tabs may be different. For that reason this section only provides a general description of modules.

Tab Description

Gazetteer

Holds location details, including:

  • Ocean
  • Continent
  • Country
  • Province/State/Territory
  • District/County/Shire
  • City/Town
  • Place name
  • Latitude and Longitude

Other Names

 Used to record alternate names for the location details specified on the Gazetteer tab.
